History of Item

Item (pronounced eetem), is one of the communities in Bende Local Government Area in Abia State, Nigeria. It shares boundaries with Akeze (in Ebony State) in the North, Nkporo in the East, Alayi in the West, and Abiriba and Igbere in the South.

                                                           village market at Apanu

The people of Item initially settled in a place called Potopo after a brief stay at Igede. They could not stay long at Igede because they could not find a certain 'precious' stone known as 'akom'. Potopo is on the Eastern part of Abam and Biakpan. Akom was a pre-historic stone used in making knives, hoes, spears and other farm implements as well as defensive and destructive weapons. It was in Potopo that they found 'akom' in large quantity. But they had to leave Potopo due to some circumstances. They first arrived at Bende. While there, they could not find any 'akom' and because of that they decided to leave and continue their journey. When they took off from Bende, after a long journey they became very weak and tired and decided to rest. While resting, the witch and native doctors treated the sick and took time to make sacrifices to the gods. It was believed that the people spent many months, if not years there since they were able to build huts for some of their gods and also for themselves. This resting place was known as Ozuzu-Ike-Item (meaning resting place for Item people), now known as Ozuitem.

When hunters and witch doctors could not find any 'akom', even though the land was very fertile, they decided to leave. As others were still contemplating on what to do, Okoko left in search of a better land. When they arrived at the present site they saw that the land was not only fertile but also had 'akom' in abundance. The entire area stretching down to the present site where Amaokwe is now located, was occupied by different people, and only force could determine if Okoko could settle there or not. At last they conquered!

                                                                  Shrine at Okoko

Item community consists of nine villages; Apanu, Akanu, Amaekpu, Amaeke, Amaokwe, Okagwe, Okai, Okoko and Umuakpa. Each village (in present time) is made up of autonomous communities with Eze (king). Okpi of Item is the overall eze for all of Item.

The Man Behind MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria

                                                                         Sergey Mavrodi

"Sergey Mavrodi is a Russian criminal and a former deputy of the State Duma. He is the founder of the МММ series of pyramid schemes. In 2007 Sergei Mavrodi was found guilty in a Russian court of defrauding 10,000 investors out of 110 million rubles ($4.3 million)
He was then elected to the State Duma, thereby obtaining parliamentary immunity. Mavrodi declared MMM bankrupt on December 22, 1997, then disappeared, and was on the run until his arrest in 2003.
In 1998 Mavrodi created Stock Generation,[ allegedly a classic pyramid scheme presented as a "virtual stock market game". The website ran from 1998 to early 2000. The Massachusetts district court initially found that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was unable to cite Stock Generation's founders and owners for securities violations. However, the United States Court of Appeals reversed this decision in 2001, concluding that the SEC alleged sufficient facts to state a triable claim.[10] In 2003 the SEC obtained permanent injunctions against SG Ltd. and relief defendants SG Perfect and SG Trading, which profited from the disbursement of funds fraudulently gained by SG Ltd.
On April 28, 2007, a Moscow court sentenced him to four and a half years in a penal colony. The court also fined him 10,000 rubles ($390).
In January 2011, Mavrodi launched another pyramid scheme called MMM-2011, asking investors to buy so-called Mavro currency units. He frankly described it as a pyramid, adding "It is a naked scheme, nothing more ... People interact with each other and give each other money. For no reason!" Mavrodi said that his goal with MMM-2011 is to destroy the current financial system, which he considers unfair, which would allow something new to take its place. MMM-2011 was able to function openly as Ponzi schemes and financial pyramids are not illegal under Russian law. In May 2012 he froze the operation and announced that there would be no more payouts.
In 2011 he launched a similar scheme in India, called MMM India, again stating clearly that the vehicle is a pyramid.[16] He has also launched MMM in China. He was reported to be trying to expand his operations into Western Europe, Canada, and Latin America.[14] As of September 2015 it had spread rapidly in South Africa with a claimed 1% per day or 30% per month interest rate scheme[18] and warnings from both the South African and Russian Communist Parties for people not to participate in it.
Book
In 2008 Mavrodi published the book "Temptation". In May 2008, bailiffs arrested Mavrodi's rights to this book. Seven thousand copies of the book were published."

Former Nigerian 1st lady claims frozen accounts worth $31.5M

LAGOS, Nigeria — Former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan is claiming ownership of bank accounts allegedly worth $31.5 million that have been frozen in a corruption investigation, prompting anti-corruption groups to demand her prosecution.

The wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan filed suit asking the Federal High Court in Lagos to unfreeze five U.S. dollar accounts at Nigeria’s Skye Bank. They were frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in July.
Separately, her lawyer sent a letter to the commission saying $15 million of the money was a government payment for medical bills she incurred in London in 2013.
Nigerians have taken to social media to deride that claim, asking if she planned to heal the entire world or was buying eternal life. But some accused the anti-graft commission of subjecting her and others to “trial by media.”
The commission has detained hundreds of people in a yearlong investigation of tens of billions of dollars missing from the state treasury that has not produced any successful prosecutions.
The commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit and letter, which were dated last week and obtained by The Associated Press.
President Goodluck Jonathan left office in May 2015 after being voted out.
Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, a civil society group, demanded that the attorney general immediately undertake criminal proceedings against the former first lady.
Nigerian media quoted unidentified anti-corruption commission officers as saying all but one of the frozen accounts were set up in the names of domestic workers, though the former first lady was the sole signatory.
A former senior presidential aide, a lawyer and a bank official are among people named in the corruption case that alleges graft and money laundering.

India Muslim women 'raped' in fatal attack 'over beef'

An Indian woman has said that she and her 14-year-old cousin were gang raped and two relatives murdered, after being accused of being Muslims who ate beef. The woman, 20, told the BBC that four men carried out the attack in northern Haryana state two weeks ago. She denied consuming beef.

She said the men beat her uncle and aunt to death in their home in Mewat.
Many Hindus consider cows sacred and the slaughter of the animal is banned in several states, including Haryana.
The suspects have been arrested and charged with rape and murder.
However police have told reporters that there is no evidence to suggest that cow protection groups were involved in the attack.
Although the alleged rape took place two weeks ago, news of the incident has only just come out.
"They [the accused men] said that we ate cow meat and that is why we were being disgraced [raped]. They even threatened to kill me and my family if we ever told anybody what happened to us," the woman told BBC Urdu.

Muslim-dominated Mewat district, 100km (62 miles) from the capital Delhi, recently made headlines after a senior official told reporters that police would check dishes of mutton biryani to ensure they did not contain beef.
The latest attack has increased tensions.
Rape and gender crimes have been in the spotlight in India in recent years after the brutal gang rape and murder of a student in 2012 in Delhi.
In response, tough new anti-rape laws were introduced in the country.
However, brutal sexual attacks against women and children continue to be reported across the country.
