Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, the man who named his dog Buhari, has already spent three days in prison in Ogun state as his family was unable to meet the bail conditions granted to him, the Vanguard reports. The man was granted the bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum by an Ogun state magistrate court for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari’. Family sources told reporters that they were able to raise only N20, 000, but could not complete the whole sum.

A source stated that they made passionate appeals to the Nigerian authorities to accept what they had and release the trader. Meanwhile, it was not clear if their petitions had been accepted but sources said the authorities were still profiling two of his guarantors as at 3.30pm of August 24, Wednesday.

Chinakwe’s neighbour, who police identified as Halilu Umar from Sokoto State, reported the man to the police, saying that his decision was aimed at spiting and ridiculing his father who also happened to be named ‘Alhaji Buhari.’ However, the trader said in court that he named his dog ‘Buhari’ out of personal affection he had for President Muhammadu Buhari.
